Twilight Saga Online

Article by Brooks Gilliam

haps a bit like taking a night off from the lottery, only to find out that the numbers you choose week-in and week-out were chosen on the one night you decided not to buy a ticket. As we now know, Twilight became a hit and best-seller when originally it was published in 2005 in hardback. The book debuted at number 5 on the New York Times list of Best Sellers. within only a month of being released, and then went on to make number 1.The same year, Twilight the novel was given the accolade of being named one of Publisher’s Weekly’s Best in Children’s Books. Further, it went on to be the biggest selling novel of 2008 and has spent over 91 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list. It has been translated into 37 languages. The first book of the Twilight series introduces 17 year-old Isabella “Bella” Swan who relocates with her father to Forks in Washington. There, while attending school, she meets Edward Cullen and falls in love with him. Unfortunately, little does she know that Edward is in fact a vampire!Following on from the first novel is New Moon, Eclipse and then Breaking Dawn. The film adaptation of Twilight was released in 2008 and became a commercial success grossing in excess of $ 382 million US worldwide. A further $ 157 came from DVD sales in North America alone up to and including July of 2009.In the early days – back in 2005, initial reviews for Twilight were in general fairly positive. Publishers Weekly went so far as to say that Stephenie Meyer “was one of the most promising new authors of 2005”. Seems they got that right then, to say the least! The Times said that the book captured “perfectly the teenage feeling of sexual tension and alienation”. Nice way to put it, actually!Amazon.com described the novel as being “deeply romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful”. Seems true-to-type vampire meets human love story, but with more subtleness, intricacy, delicacy and romance, agreed? And I rather like this one myself – Publishers Weekly’s starred review described Bella’s “infatuation with outsider Edward, their risky relationship, and Edward’s inner struggle” as a metaphor for sexual frustration accompanying adolescence”. Nothing new there then, is this not the typical teenage romance we are all so familiar with in today’s society? Simply goes to show how true-to-life the Twilight novels and movies really are; but of course – with a twist!
